Past and Future Total Solar Eclipses over some Canadian Cities (Revisited)

In 1982, I published "Past and Future Total Solar Eclipses over some Canadian Cities" in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Vol.76, NO. 5, P. 309., a paper that identified the last and next total solar eclipse visible from a number of cities in Canada.

That was 38 years ago. What's happened since?

Apparently a few things... the World Wide Web, for example... and new solar and lunar theories for better positions of the Sun and Moon. In 1982, I used Newcomb's solar theory (1895) and Brown's lunar theory (1919). By 2020, analytical solutions based on numerical integrations of the Sun and Moon resulted in the VSOP87 theory constructed by P. Bretagnon and G. Francou (1988) and the ELP-2000/82 theory of M. Chapront-Touze and J. Chapront (1983).

Not all the changes were technological. In 1999, the territory of Nunavut was split off from the Northwest Territories, resulting in a new capital city of Iqaluit.

During my 2020 isolation, I recomputed the dates of the last and next total solar eclipses for the cities in the original paper (including Iqaluit), and I identified only one discrepancy with the results of my earlier paper. The one exception was the case of the last total solar eclipse in Regina, which I had previously identified as occurring on -54 May 19. With the new solar and lunar theories, I can now confirm that a short eclipse occurred on 1151 Aug 13.

Three total solar eclipses of the twenty-first century will intercept major Canadian cities. Compare the graphics from my 1982 paper (upper-left) with a recent equivalent static image (upper-right), and an animated GIF (left).

For each Canadian city below, I show its last and next total solar eclipse with a global overview and a city close-up. The city close-up shows the outline of the umbra (total eclipse) at the moment of maximum eclipse.
