For all central eclipses, two situations can exist at the time of maximum eclipse. If the center of the moon's shadow passes within 0.42 earth radii of the earth's center, a complete outline of the penumbra will appear on the earth's surface. If the distance is greater than 0.47 earth radii, part of the penumbra will extend beyond the earth's limb. Between these limits, the actual situation depends on the size of the penumbra, the minimum approach to the center of the earth, the direction of the shadow, and the apparent flattening of the earth.
The 17 eclipses displayed here have the edge of the penumbra passing within 0.0014 earth radii of the earth's limb, and are sorted according to increased distance from the center of the earth at maximum eclipse. The impact distance is the distance from the limb of the earth to the edge of the penumbra when the penumbra is fully outlined on the earth's surface. The miss distance is the distance from the limb of the earth to the edge of the penumbra when the penumbra extends off the surface of the earth.
