The Total Solar Eclipse of Dec. 04, 2002, in Australia

Background

My wife Blythe and I travelled to the Australian Outback to observe and photograph the total solar eclipse on Dec. 04, 2002. Our viewing site was near Koolymilka. With coordinates of 136o32' E. and 30o57' S., we were directly on the center line and enjoyed 29 seconds of totality with the Sun only 6o above the horizon. Sky conditions were perfect and we had a great view.
Properly attired in our eclipse T-shirts, we check out the eclipse viewing location.
The total eclipse occurred near the end of its path across the Earth. The Sun set in partial eclipse at 8:15 p.m. ACDT, only 34 minutes after totality.

Photographs taken with a Meade 4" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, Olympus OM-1 SLR camera, and Kodachrome 64 slide film

A short exposure shows the chromosphere.
A longer exposure shows the corona.
